The Kyrgyz president signed a new law allowing fines for spreading “false information” online just after a court in Kyrgyzstan ordered the closure of independent broadcaster April TV for allegedly inciting unrest.
Azim Roy vanished from public view after relocating to America in the 90s, with little to no news about him for two decades – until a photograph surfaced showing him sitting on a couch with the President of Kyrgyzstan, Sadyr Japarov, and his relative by marriage, Akylbek Tumonbayev.
Azim Roy came to the public’s attention in the fall of 2023 when Kyrgyzstan’s State Security Committee issued an international warrant for his arrest. However, the search was abruptly called off not long after it began.
